Let’s make a tour from flat Slavonia and Baranja – very East part of Croatia, across hilly Zagorje and mighty Lika to Zagreb-Croatian capital.
Nature Park Papuk is famous and often mention as the pearl of Slavonia due to remarkable beauty of Jankovac. That is quite reasonable, when the visitors stay breathless looking at swooping water downward 30 meters high cliff, or during a romantic walk near lakes where only trout disturbs the quietness of lake’s glass-like surface. One can not be but fascinated listening to the rustle of the leafs under the canopies of a hundred year old beech, that spread their roots over the thin humus asserting themselves on the rocks that remembers the oldest days of this land. If we go further northeast, at the junction of the rivers Drava and Danube there’s famous Nature Park Kopački rit. Thanks to its interesting marsh vegetation and special fauna, variety of marsh birds and big mammals, Kopački rit takes a prominent place on the list of the most valuable marshlands in the world and for many years is already on the preliminary list of UNESCO's cultural and natural world heritage.
Completely different but not less beautiful are Nature parks Medvednica and Petrova gora, in the vicinity of Zagreb. Both of them will surprise you on its own way: Medvednica with its long and rich history in museum of Peasant revolt in Gornja Stubica and unique sights like cave Veternica, silver mine Zrinski and educational trail “Bliznec” – first educational trail in Europe which is completely, in construction and content, adapted to persons with special needs.
As a witness of the past, here's Nature park Petrova gora – Peter’s mountain (named to honour the last Croatian national king Petar Svačić who was killed there) with its memorial monuments from the World war II.
At the end of this tour, National Park Plitvička jezera (Plitvice Lakes) will be like a special gift… the richness of 16 wonderful interlinked azurel-green coloured crystalline lakes…
