Hrvatsko Zagorje is region situated in north west part of Croatia, in the vicinity of Zagreb, its capital. Above Zagreb raise Medvednica mountain with similar Nature Park Medvednica, founded 1981. At the very entrance of Nature Park there’s forest trail “Bliznec”, a first educational trail in Europe which is completely, in construction and content, adapted to persons with special needs. Beside numerous walking paths and bicycle tracks, this Park is unique with some sites which might take your breath away. Inevitable is Veternica cave, the longest one in Northern Croatia, which shows geomorphologic phenomenon’s rarely seen in in classically tourist adapted caves oval erosion forms made by water vortexes, which tell us about former water stream, sand dunes left after the last underground stream which used to spring from Veternica, extinct cave bear's ( Ursus speleus ) lower jaw, fossil mud, the Well of wishes in Concert hall Stone waterfall (a beautiful dripstone formation) etc. Fourteen species of bats hibernate in the whole cave.

Medieval silver mine “Zrinski” is the first mine in Croatia opened for visitors. In a year 1527. begins the history on mining in Zrinski mine. Long labor of many miners resulted with variety of corridors through which you can take a stroll today.

On the other side of Medvednica mountain we’ll take you further to and through the history in 16th century; exhibits in Oršić manor will tell you the story about Peasant Revolt from 1573. and their leader Matija Gubec. In close vicinity of the museum Matija Gubec was gathering with his like-minders under, today, 400 years old linden tree.

Another part of Hrvatsko Zagorje is Kumrovec, a birth place of Josip Broz Tito today is ethno village made of 18 houses; each one representing one aspect of life of a country man in Hrvatsko Zagorje during 18th and 19th century.

Veliki Tabor is the ancient fortress of the Ratkay counts from the 15th century. This Gothic/Renaissance structure emanates the mysterious atmosphere of legends about the tragic fate of Veronika of Desinić.
It’s interesting to have on mind that right after the Loire valley in France, this region is the richest with number of burgs, castles and fortifications.
